182 entries were received across 14 categories, including best commercial/retail building, best conservation/restoration project, best cultural building and best house. In addition, a new category for overseas projects has been added this year as architectural firms continue to look abroad for work. The winners will be announced and presented with their awards on the evening of Monday, 21st June 2010 in the Farmleigh Gallery.

Commenting on the awards, RIAI President Paul Keogh said: “The return for creating an outstanding built environment can be one hundred fold – quality architecture is a major factor in creating value and in the measurement of quality of life factors. Authoritive research is now reporting on the increasing importance of ‘soft’ infrastructure. The three most important factors that influence local economic growth are location, physical characteristics and infrastructure. The results of a major Gallup poll conclude that the factors which people most value in their choice of places to live are aesthetics and lifestyle, and services and facilities.”

Eddie Conroy, Chairman, Judging Panel, said, “Despite the downturn the number, quality and diversity of buildings submitted for the 2010 RIAI Awards is reassuring and will make for a worthwhile and interesting touring exhibition to every corner of Ireland. The diversity of the shortlist shows that architectural skill and design adds value, not just to large corporate and public projects, but at the scale of the individual family home.”
