‘It was looking pretty fake’

A 1970s building designed to mimic the vernacular architecture of the Veneto countryside has been refurbished by Italian studio Andrea Tognon

Residence O has been transformed by adding the missing corner to the building’s L-shaped floor plan. The new extension of the two-storey building incorporates a glazed section spanning from the ground to the roof. The project also involved replacing the existing overhanging roof with one that sits flush with the edges of exterior walls and a complete redesign of the interior.

Speaking about the design, the architect said: “Yeah, it was looking pretty fake. The floor plan was a square where a corner was missing and the roof was a concrete slab jutting out in a very inelegant and badly proportioned manner. So we decided to add the corner that was missing to complete the square floor plan.” Because of this total redefinition of the insulation parameter, the profile of the building was reshaped by cutting the old roof edge and redesigning the junction between the roof and perimetrical walls. The interior layout was also redesigned; all the walls and roof were insulated and the heating system was switched to solar energy.
