Christ + Gantenbein wins Kunstmuseum extension competition
Swiss architects Christ + Gantenbein have been awarded first prize in a competition to design an extension to the Kunstmuseum in Basel
|
|
The winning design was chosen from 23 international architects, including submissions from Peter Zumthor, Zaha Hadid, Rafael Moneo, Tadao Ando and Jean Nouvel. The proposal by Diener & Diener, Basel received the second prize and the Japanese office SANAA was awarded the third prize.
The design by Christ & Gantenbein is defined as a “contemporary brother” of the Kunstmuseum, which was constructed in the 1930’s. With its angled form, the massive structure gives reference to the historical former buildings of the “Burghof” and creates the front building between St. Alban Vorstadt and Dufourstrasse.

The direct entry to the new building facing the street is formed by the extension of the existing arcades of the Kunstmuseum and is marked by the drawn-in corner of the front facade. The subterranean alley is performed from the existing Museum, giving view to a garden foyer of the lowering courtyard, a “giardino segreto”. Both accesses are leading to the foyer at ground level. From here the visitor start its circuit to the two upper exhibition floors. Commenting on the design, the architects say he openings of the facade are giving scale and proportion to the building structure: the closed wall of the top floor where the special shows are taking place, the upright windows of the first floor and the pragmatically placed openings in the ground level mark the vertical organization of the building. On the brick facade, a “digital art magazine”, a frieze made out of light emitting diodes, defines the expression of the new building in the city.
