Project: The Gate Theatre

Location: Cavendish Row, Parnell Square, Dublin 1

Architects: Scott Tallon Walker

Image: GATE1

Brief: To provide a rehearsal room that can double as a small venue; improved get-in facilities; and additional storage and office space to the Gate Theatre. The project involved the removal of several unsightly additions to the 18th century structure dating from the 1950s and 1980s. The ESB substation is relocated and the fire escape and entrance foyer to the Pillar Room beneath the Theatre are incorporated into the project.
The new extension is composed of simple geometric forms clad in granite to match the existing buildings, yet visually distinct from them. The juxtaposition of new and old is clearly articulated with subtle changes in plane and simplicity in detailing. Flush, backlit poster boxes animate street level and provide clerestory lighting to the offices. The northern elevation is composed of a strong corner with a grand window addressing Parnell Square. This glass and timber screen allows views both into and from the rehearsal space, while maintaining visual privacy. The architectural expression to the northwest and west recalls earlier additions to the classical structure. The rehearsal room is identical in size to the main stage with space for a row of seating and provides an ideal environment for the rehearsal of productions.
